At the northwest corner of Macedonia, at the junction of its borders with Albania and Yugoslavia, there are two picturesque lakes, the Little and Great Prespa (altitude 853 meters - 2,798 feet) in the area of the same name.  Near the Lakes there are remarkable, traditional settlements, the most important of which are – Agios Germanos, Psarades, Lemos, Kallithea, Karyes and Vrontero.

Prespes belong to the Prefecture of Florina. The roads lead to our area, one from Florina, through the mountain pass of Vigla – Possiderio, and the other from Kastoria, through the area of Korestia. They meet at Prevali, from where the only road snakes upward. From that point we can see the entire Little Prespa with its islands, Vidronissi and Agios Achillios, while in the background one can distinguish the Great Prespa.

In a circular formation, at a short distance from the lakes, three high mountainous shapes independent of one another, rise, forming a flat lake basin. These mountains, rich in forests of oak, beech, fir and cedar are Vrondero (1,456m – 4,777ft) in the west, Triklario (Sfika, 1,756m – 5,761ft) in the south, and Varnoundas (Peristeri, 2,156m – 7,073ft.) in the east.

Plentiful water begins from high up and with small streams, rivers and underground streams ending up in the lakes. A flat silt belt of earth, 200m (656 ft) wide and 3km (1,9miles) long, divides the two lakes which meet however at a small fork at Koula.  This area is called Vromolimni or Viro, but all of Little Prespes make up a unique wetland which, together with its surrounding slopes has been declared a National Park, a place of particular natural beauty.
